Industrial Technology

Alongside the printed, PDF and page-flip formats, Industrial Technology is also available as a digital publication on Apple and Android tablets. This builds on our platform of covering all aspects of design and manufacturing and extends the value proposition by providing all the benefits of an interactive electronic publication.

Closing the circle between the print world and the online world, the tablet edition of Industrial Technology enables readers to email suppliers, access those suppliers’ websites directly, watch associated videos, view supplier locations via Google Maps, access social media links and more, all without having to move from one medium to the other.

The Industrial Technology app also provides a platform for other of our publications, such as the innovative Industrial Technology EXTRA and our various specials through the year, such as Engineering in Sport.

With a mix of interesting case studies and thought provoking technology articles, Industrial Technology EXTRA! provides you with additional resources while you’re away from the regular workplace.

Optimised for viewing on screen, the magazine can be viewed in PDF format, on our flip-page magazine library, and is available via the Industrial Technology app. You can download the Industrial Technology app both from the Apple App Store (for iPad) and from Google Play (for Android devices).

As well as comprehensive links within each article, the various adverts are also zonally interactive, with links for web addresses, email links, location maps, social media content, and different product groups.

A new issue of Industrial Technology EXTRA! is published every Monday.

To download the Industrial Technology app and the latest issues for both Apple and Android click  APPLE or ANDROID

News from Industrial Technology

Revisited: The effect of repairs on motor efficiencyRevisited: The effect of repairs on motor efficiency

As the use of premium efficiency (IE3) motors has increased, due in part to strengthened regulation, the question of maintaining motor efficiency after a rewind process has reappeared. The most recent study, conducted in 2019, by AEMT and EASA has again used independent testing facilities and (more...)

Ensuring UK plc is a winner as we navigate the ‘new normal’

Professor calls for engineers to help solve NHS and healthcare issues amid pandemicProfessor calls for engineers to help solve NHS and healthcare issues amid pandemic

A new project has been launched to unite engineers from across the world to help solve challenges deriving from the Covid-19 pandemic. Professor Peter Ogrodnik, a biomedical engineer from Keele University, is leading the project in collaboration with the Institution of Engineering Designers, who (more...)

A tale of squires, stew and electric vehicles

My daughter came home from school with a maths joke. Three mighty armies gathered ready to do battle; one from the south and two from the north. On the night before the upcoming battle, the soldiers of each army drank themselves into a slumber. Each army had a squire carrying its banner. In the (more...)

A joker in the pack, but still a losing hand

Just when we’d all breathed a collective sigh of relief that Brexit was finally behind us and we could get on with the day jobs, the posturing has started up again. First battleground for the trade negotiations, it seems, will be fishing, with Europe insisting that it must have access to (more...)

Bleak house, but great expectations

Suffering of late with a rather nasty cough, Mrs Simms was keen to check that she wasn’t keeping me awake through the night. “It did at first,” I said, munching through my breakfast. “But I soon got used to it, like the way you do with a particularly loud clock.” The (more...)

The debate on democracy – to the moon and back

I’ve just finished reading a novel that promised much but delivered very little. The picture on the front and blurb on the back hinted at one story; the content delivered another entirely. It promised a murder on the moon, three people caught up in the turmoil – a classic who-dunnit. The (more...)

UK manufacturing and the art of doing up a tie

I remember, when I was young, the importance of finding the thing that you were best at. Being best at something gave status, at a time in our primary school lives when we were all trying to understand our place in the world. Sometimes it was badge that was carried around with pride. Sometimes it (more...)

Deferred gratification or meaningless promises?

I vaguely remember a programme on the telly some years back examining the understanding in young children of the now and of the future. And they tested it using techniques of deferred gratification: you can have one sweet now, or a whole bag of sweets in one hour – which do you want? In (more...)

Understanding the impact of the availability heuristic

A friend was telling me a joke: “This bloke walks into a pub,” he began, but to be honest I zoned out almost immediately. All I could think was, well – who is this bloke? Have I ever met him? What’s he like? I’m guessing, by the time he spends at the pub, that (more...)

Proof again that nostalgia ain’t what it used to be?

This has been a month of disappointments in a televisual sense, as I caught up with three remakes from my viewing youth, only to discover that time and technology alone are no guarantee of improvement over the original. First example was Magnum PI, the reboot of which I discovered quite by accident (more...)

Exports are up, but Brexit could have a sting in the tail

MakeUK, the rebranded EEF and vocal supporter of the UK’s manufacturing sector, has published a new fact card providing details of the industry’s health – and very interesting reading it makes, too. Produced in association with Santander Corporate and Commercial, it highlights a (more...)

The vinyl revival in an increasingly digital world

Every February, Tonbridge hosts the UK’s largest second-hand and vintage hi-fi event, AudioJumble, which I attend religiously each year. Not to buy, necessarily, but often merely to peruse a veritable museum of classic audio equipment. In fact, it’s even better than a museum because at (more...)

A sorry tale of Brexit and instant mashed potato

With Mrs Simms being away for a few days, I’ve been left to fend for myself. For the most part this has been okay, thanks to some forward planning – which essentially meant politely asking the gastronomically adept Mrs Simms to prepare a few meals in advance, which I could then reheat at (more...)

Politicians on all sides are showing their true colours

So what have we learned from the publication by the Government of the draft withdrawal document? Two key things I think. First, that the terms of the withdrawal aren’t great – more on that later. Second – and in fact this has a great bearing on the first point – that this is (more...)

Star Trek and the virtuous circle of product innovation

As a self-confessed and unashamed Trekkie, having watched every TV series and movie many times over, I’ll freely admit that I can probably be a bit of a bore on the subject. I eagerly anticipate and enjoy all the new output on the big screen, as well as the recently released Star Trek (more...)

Expanding our thinking on the sharing economy

Taking advantage of the pleasant summer weather, Mrs Simms and I wandered into town this week for an enjoyable evening out, deciding on a whim that it was the perfect day for a meal at our local Italian. Perusing the menu, the bottle of chilled white wine and the king prawns in garlic starter more (more...)

A musical take on the benefits of integration

Probably my favourite band over the last 30 years has been Crowded House. In lead singer and principal song writer Neil Finn, the Crowdies have a front man who at one turn can take you on a journey of emotional self discovery, and at another can simply extract the last possible ounce of pop from a (more...)

Chasing the market when you’re in the middle ground

It was Helmuth von Moltke the Elder, chief of staff with the Prussian army before World War 1, who said that no battle plan ever survives contact with the enemy. Today, for me, that mantra is as true for my DIY projects as it is for the theatre of war. No matter how well planned the project, there (more...)

Brexit, the barman and the boiled egg

A man goes into a bar and orders a pint of beer, a large red wine, a brandy, a gin and tonic, a vodka and orange, and a whisky, which he then proceeds to drink. “Crikey,” says the barman, “that’s quite an order.” Another man comes up to the bar, and orders ten times (more...)

International consumers prepared to pay up to 22% more for British goods

As Britain prepares to negotiate fresh trade deals abroad, new global research from Barclays Corporate Banking reveals two fifths (39%) of international consumers would be more inclined to buy a product if it displayed the Union Jack. This was especially true for consumers in Asia and the Middle (more...)

Is AI a friend or a foe to industry?

Back in 1984, we marvelled at the special effects that brought Arnold Schwarzenegger to the big screen in Terminator as a time travelling cyborg, out to kill Sarah Connor, future mother of the leader of the resistance (John Connor) against the machines in the future, before he could be conceived. (more...)

Impact of Carillion dwarfs the Brexit and Trump effects

The first year of the Donald Trump presidency have seen ongoing concerns about his suspect judgement, planning, problem solving abilities and impulse control, culminating in a group of 70 mental health professionals sending a public letter to White House physicians urging them to evaluate his mental (more...)

Is good design just a question of perspective?

Being a food critic must surely be the best job in the world. You eat out constantly, feasting on the wares of the some of the nicest eateries in the country, washed down with the most pleasant wines. Restauranteurs welcome you with open arms, ready to present you with the best cuisine – (more...)

Across Europe, the only constant is change

I had yet another fantastic money-making idea. Could have been an app, could have been a website, but people would have been queuing up to pay me money for the privilege of using/viewing my product. What could it be, you ask? My plan was to take a century’s-worth of maps showing the changing (more...)

Defining the challenges for a low carbon future

The Energy Institute has published its 2017 Energy Barometer, presenting the views of UK energy professionals on the effectiveness of measures to reach emissions targets and transition energy supplies to sustainable sources. So what did the survey find? Looking at what measures the government should (more...)

Infrastructure challenge for an all-battery future

The government’s announcement that all sales of new petrol and diesel cars and vans would be banned from 2040 wasn’t entirely unexpected, but buried within the detail was the implication that hybrid vehicles would also be off the menu. That leaves us with only electric vehicles to get us (more...)

Cheeseburger lessons for UK manufacturing

At a typical high street fast food restaurant chain, you’ll pay in the order of £4.50 for a decent sized cheeseburger with fries and a soft drink. My local slightly more upmarket high street eatery wanted to charge me £12.50 for much the same meal. Granted you pay a premium for an (more...)

A new concept in electric motorsA new concept in electric motors

Appropriately named, therefore, the Stepchange motor is designed around a radically different concept. Well, I never saw that one coming

Every American I spoke to, while agreeing that these were probably the worst two candidates they’d ever had to (more...)

The challenge of added value manufacturing...

If there is one thing as consumers that annoys us more than products which fail to live up to our expectations, then it is products which fail to live up to the claims of the manufacturer. And the irritation is the same regardless of the value of the product. For example, I have, over the years, (more...)
