Southern Manufacturing returns to Farnborough
Southern Manufacturing & Electronics, the UK’s top annual industrial exhibition, returns to Farnborough from 5-7 February 2019. The relocation to a new permanent venue in 2018 proved to be a landmark in the show’s two decade story and the impetus for further expansion in 2019.
Exhibitor bookings for February’s show are currently more than 20% ahead of last year, which indicates that the show is on course to reach its maximum capacity. Along with a record volume of exhibitors anticipated, the show has formalised relationships with several influential industry organisations, like Composites UK, the Confederation of British Metalforming, Farnborough Aerospace Consortium, The British Gear Association, Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and the Gauge and Toolmakers Association. The partnerships will enable the roll-out of new show features and access to authoritative technical know-how by way of the show’s comprehensive free technical seminar programme, available to all visitors and exhibitors.
The perennially popular seminar programme operates in two separate lecture rooms dedicated to manufacturing and electronics respectively. The hour-long sessions run across all three days of the event and cover a wide-ranging agenda, from emergent technologies to industrial regulation and best practice. Some of the new topics being addressed as part of the 2019 programme include an examination of incremental sheet forming processes, automated mould design and large scale 3D printing.
For those who didn’t visit the show in 2018, Southern’s new home will come as a bit of a revelation. Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre opened in 2018, and is the most significant purpose-built exhibition site to open in the UK for twenty years. Now fully complete – the venue was still under construction for Southern 2018 – FIECC offers truly world-class, comfortable surroundings complete with all the amenities one would expect. Free onsite parking for 3,500 cars and easy access from the motorway network make visiting Farnborough a far more pleasant experience than some of the UK’s other exhibition centres.
Once inside the venue, visitors can expect to meet an extremely broad range of exhibitors, drawn from around the UK, continental Europe and beyond. A small selection of the products and services on show includes working demonstrations of CNC machine tools and machining centres, robotics and automation, electronic components, CAD/CAM tools, advanced adhesives, fasteners and joining technology, laser cutting, packaging solutions, labelling and marking, pressings, fabrications and enclosures, metrology and test equipment, coating and finishing, motors, drives and controls, handling and storage solutions amongst many others.
The show is also a prime marketplace for engineering services ranging from contract electronics manufacture to precision engineering. Given the show’s physical location at the birthplace of the UK’s £22bn aerospace industry, the exhibitor list features a high percentage of AS9100-rated suppliers with particular expertise in aerospace and other demanding sectors such as medical and automotive.
Also, and rather encouragingly given the current uncertainty over Brexit, Southern Manufacturing 2019 has seen a significant increase in the number of foreign firms exhibiting. Bookings from non UK-based companies are 26% up on 2018, meaning that visitors will have the opportunity to meet a significant number of companies that would not normally be encountered at a domestic show.
As usual, Southern 2019 will host an excellent array of working machinery exhibits from premium brands such as Yamazaki Mazak, CMZ, Haas and many others. Bystronic demonstrates its Xpert 40 press brake with Mobile Bending Robot. The robot is offered for feeding the press brake, making it into a lightweight, automated bending cell for manufacturing 3D sheet metal components. Bruderer UK is going to be showcasing its collection of high speed stamping presses, and affordable pre-owned presses that have been refurbished to a excellent standard.
Matsuura will be displaying the larger sibling to its highly acclaimed and sought after MX-520, the most recent high capacity 5-axis MX-850. 2019 also sees the welcome return of many former exhibitors. Citizen Machinery UK will present for its first Southern since 2007, accompanied by other notable brands such as Mitutoyo (UK), Schimdt Technology, Filtermist and Hainbuch UK, which is displaying its modular quick change collet-style workholding system. Hainbuch’s modular system can be adapted easily and quickly with mandrels, jaw chucks plus a variety of other devices enabling swift and accurate changeovers owing to its patented simple zero point location system.
Gewefa UK presents its new M96ER hydraulic collet chuck, which features a cutter securing concept that reduces spindle run out, and automatic tool centring. Other highlights include a new range of modular angle heads from Pibomulti, the quick-change Varia toolholding system from EWS, Power Check pull force gauge and accessories from OTT-Jakob and Nann’s range of standard collet chucks.
New exhibitor Canvys, a division of Richardson Electronics, is a specialist in OEM and custom display engineering; designing and manufacturing display products from the initial steps of design through the entire product lifecycle. Another new exhibitor is Polydist UK, distributor for some of the world’s leading polymer producers, such as Braskem, Equate and SABIC. At Southern 2019 Polydist UK highlights SABIC’s Specialties products, recently added to its portfolio of polymer resins. The products include the well-known SABIC brands NORYL resins, ULTEM resins and LNP compounds, co-polymer polycarbonate grades.
Advanced manufacturing is well represented at Southern Manufacturing 2019, with leading hardware vendors such as Laser Lines and Creat3D, and specialist services providers such as Industrial Plastic Fabrications and Digits2Widgets (D2W), a manufacturer of quality models, functional prototypes, time-sensitive short runs and end-use engineering components en masse. D2W’s London-based facility houses a range of additive manufacturing capabilities including selective laser sintering (SLS) and stereolithography (SLA).
Southern 2019 is also one of the UK’s most important marketplaces for electronics manufacturing services, both onshore and offshore. EC Electronics will launch its Product Realisation package at Southern 2019, which has been developed to allow budding entrepreneurs and companies to bring their ideas to life. Wimborne-based, ISO9001:2015, ISO14001:2015 and AS9100D accredited Electronic Technicians delivers a wide range of manufacturing services from complex cable harness assembly, mixed technology PCB assembly, conformal coating and encapsulation to final product assembly.
Some examples of the many offshore CEMS exhibiting for 2019 include PCB Baltic, Latvia’s Volburg SIA and Systronics, part of the Swiss Cicor group. Regular exhibitor Eurocircuits presents its five-day prototype and small series electronics assembly service, supported with an online PCBA visualiser tool to provide immediate DFM feedback and online pricing for PCB, components and assembly. From further afield, Shenzhen’s X-Mulong Circuit returns for 2019.
Southern Manufacturing & Electronics 2019 runs from February 5th to 7th at Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre, alongside Farnborough Airport in Hampshire, close to the M3. Admission to the exhibition is free of charge. More information and entry tickets can be obtained from www.industrysouth.co.uk. Farnborough Exhibition and Conference Centre features complimentary on-site car parking and is easily reached by road, air or public transport.
