Encoder order signals electric vehicle success
Following the success of rotary optical encoders supplied by Heidenhain company Renco, in the development by Zytek Electric Vehicles of an electric motor-gearbox to replace the engine and drivetrain in a conventional fuel-powered vehicle, Renco has received a substantial order for rotary encoders for pre-production manufacturing scheduled in 2010.

The innovative Zytek development is based on a 16-pole brushless motor with integrated electronics, and its highly accurate rotor positioning depends on the Renco R35i encoders which provide high-resolution feedback for motor commutation and velocity control.

With a maximum line count of 8,192, the R35i met Zytek's specification for integrated commutation outputs and high-resolution performance in a compact product; it has an outside diameter of only 35mm. The R35i is just one of a wide range of rotary optical encoders available from Renco, an industry-leading manufacturer of a wide range of standard and bespoke rotary optical encoders.

Zytek's state-of-the-art drivetrain utilises brushless DC motor technology that integrates electric motor, power and control electronics into a single assembly that requires only three connections - for water, and high- and low-voltage (300 V and 12 V, respectively).

The global hybrid car market is expected to reach a value of $67.7 billion by 2015, according to a recent report by Global Markets Direct.
