Fourth generation bearings reduce rotational torque index
Koyo Bearings has introduced its next generation of LFT (low friction torque) tapered roller bearings, delivering a further reduction of friction and bringing the rotational torque index down from the 100 of the original LFT series to just 14.
The fourth generation LFT tapered roller bearings tackle the three main causes of rational friction including sliding resistance, rolling viscosity resistance and agitation resistance. All combine to slow the free movement of the bearing components, creating friction and heat which ultimately reduces the lifespan of the bearing.
The fourth generation builds on previous iterations to combine the advances into a single unit. The first generation LFT saw Koyo make a significant improvement in the optimisation of the profile and roughness of the large rib and roller end face to reduce the sliding resistance. In the second generation, Koyo added new technology to tackle the rolling viscosity resistance with a special ‘crowning’ of the raceways. Then in the third generation Koyo introduced a steel cage that helped regulate the inflow of lubricating oil and reduce agitation resistance, as well as seeing further improvements on the internal geometry and raceways.
To improve performance further still, with the fourth generation Koyo has introduced a resin cage (as opposed to steel). This provides a greater number of design options to control the inflow clearance between rings and cage. Further gains were made with the development of special heat treatments that allow the bearings to be reduced in size without loss of durability or performance.
In addition to tapered roller bearings, the LFT series also includes ball bearings, torque hub units and needle roller thrust bearings, delivering the benefits of reduced energy loss, reduced size/weight and improved efficiency across the broadest spread of applications.
