Getting the best performance from your production machinery

Getting the best performance from your production machinery

All manufacturers seek to maximise the reliability and effectiveness of their production machinery whilst driving down the total cost of ownership. But how can companies achieve this within budget and often in the absence of necessary skills? Phil Burge, Marketing and Communications Manager at SKF offers an industry-leading strategy for improving the performance of manufacturing assets.

Manufacturers are always on the lookout for ways to maximise machine performance, and at the same time reduce their operational and maintenance costs. Getting the right performance from rotating equipment can help meet business objectives and sharpen that competitive edge. But the 'right performance' for one manufacturer is not necessarily the same for another.

In order to meet such disparate needs, SKF has grouped together a broad range of products, technologies and services, combining them with flexible new business models to meet most requirements. This has brought the whole offering under the title: Rotating Equipment Performance (REP).

With experience of almost every industrial sector and machine type, SKF can work closely with a client throughout a machine’s complete life cycle. Using the knowledge and insights gained over many years to offer advice on improving equipment design, as well as providing the high-quality products and related services needed to help those clients meet their business objectives. SKF’s REP strategy is essentially a five-step process designed to help manufacturers achieve these goals; let’s take a look at each of them:

Assess Compare performance with that of others in the sector; identify key areas for immediate improvement and savings, and set longer term goals and strategies. The SKF consultants undertaking these assessments use benchmarking tools for asset and lubrication management. Enabling operationally critical aspects to be reviewed, analysed and compared with reference values and sector best practices.

Detect Detecting machine problems using appropriate condition monitoring technologies and services can prevent costly unplanned downtime and loss of production. It also encourages and promotes efficient planning for machinery maintenance activities. As well as streamlining the process of spare parts ordering, avoiding lead-time problems and assuring maximum availability.

Maintain In addition to providing a wide range of maintenance products, SKF also offers support for activities such as alignment, balancing and bearing installation. Each of which can have a profound impact on service life expectations if poorly executed. Where in-house capabilities are sparse or non-existent, SKF can supplement a company’s professional engineering project skills onsite to help resolve rotating equipment problems.

Solve Fixing a problem is not an end in itself; further investigation should always be undertaken to ensure no reoccurrence. SKF can apply its knowledge, expertise and experience to help clients improve their rotating equipment performance by identifying and eliminating problems using its Root Cause Failure Analysis support services. These will identify underlying problems, from inadequate installation procedures to poor lubrication practices, and suggest remedial actions to prolong equipment life and enhance reliability.

Rebuild Remanufacturing cuts the life cycle cost of industrial equipment, while reducing those negative environmental impacts arising from the overuse of natural resources and energy. SKF offers professional capabilities to remanufacture, refurbish, recondition, rework or upgrade key industrial components, and this is performed by dedicated state-of-the-art service centres.
