Large prototype battery sealing

Large-format battery systems, such as those used in electric vehicles, require special sealing solutions for battery housing prototypes during the development phase. In addition to providing the usual sealing function, these seals must compensate production and temperature-related tolerances. They must also demonstrate optimised compression behaviour so that they can be secured using a small number of screws, close to a permanent seal, and are still easy to open again.

With its modular housing seal, Freudenberg Dichtungs- und Schwingungstechnik has come up with a completely new solution for which a patent application has been filed. This seal comprises NBR sealing profiles and EPDM connectors. With these two different types of elements, any housing shape can be sealed in the most simple manner imaginable. 

The NBR profile material does not age or shrink at all when exposed to thermal stress. The EPDM connectors are soft enough to allow the profiles to adjust themselves and build-up an all-round seal. Tests have shown that this modular battery housing seal can achieve protection level IP67, ie it can provide protection against strong jets of water under increased pressure and submersion capability.

This modular seal is ideally suited to the development of large battery prototypes because it can be adapted quickly and easily to suit any housing shape. It can also easily compensate larger housing tolerances while at the same time providing a very high level of protection for electric equipment.
