Linear actuator speeds up pick and place processes Linear drive specialist Igus has developed a new type of linear actuator, drylin GRW-0630, which is ideal for use in highly dynamic linear applications with low loads, particularly found in the pick and place sector. The motor is integrated into the carriage, rather than the end block, in this new linear drive system. As a result, the carriage and motor are static, allowing the rail to move vertically up and down extremely quickly - up to one metre per second!  

Instead of power being transmitted via a traditional toothed belt drive, drylin GRW-0630 has been designed with a lightweight plastic rack that eliminates deflection and pretension, and allows for smooth strokes up to 150mm based on loads up to one kilogram. The profile material of drylin GRW-0630 is aluminium, so combined with the plastic drive rack makes for a very lightweight complete system.

The drylin GRW-0630 package is a modular system complete with adaptor plates and connecting angle accessories that can be fitted with additional two or three linear gantries. As with all Igus linear drives, it is completely lubrication free, dirt and dust repellent, and provides a reliable service over a long life. Furthermore, because the product is made mainly from plastic and aluminium, is a very cost effective solution.

Igus has also introduced a number of other linear actuators, including the drylin SLN-27 miniature linear drive axis with polymer bearings. The high-performance drylin SLN-27 miniature linear axis has been developed specifically for simple hand-ling tasks in confined spaces, and it offers design flexibility for positioning small loads. The plastic module has high wear resistance, is maintenance-free, self-lubricating and corrosion-resistant, provid-ing a 'fit and forget' solution. With compact dimensions of only 22mm high by 28mm wide, it is suitable for low load sensor adjustments and feed mechanisms, as well as lightweight handling tasks such as those found in laboratory equipment.

Finally, Igus has added to its leadscrew drive range with drylin hard anodised aluminium leadscrews which are very light in weight. They are non-magnetic and rust proof, making them suitable for applications including mobile devices, medical equipment, scanners, mechanical engineering and safety engineering. To compensate for manufacturing installation tolerances, a combination of a leadscrew nut and spherical bearing has been developed. This allows for angular errors that can occur when fitting attachment brackets and this leadscrew is perfect for rehabilitation and fitness equipment.

Trapezoidal leadscrews for the food and medical sector are now available in the new materials iglidur J350, that can reach temperatures up to 220 ºC, and FDA approved iglidur A180. Available in flange and plain versions, these leadscrew nuts have low coefficients of friction, low moisture absorption and very low wear rates. Also new for highly technical applications such as vision systems and laboratory equipment, are four smaller sized high helix thread leadscrews.

The benefits of the drylin leadscrew range is that it offers a variety of thread types, to cover a vast range of applications and all of the trapezoidal nuts are produced from triboplastics. They require no maintenance or lubrication and provide technical advantages such as repelling dirt and debris.
