Manufacturing boost as companies invest

A new survey of manufacturing companies by Lloyds TSB shows that firms are expecting to invest in both more machinery and additional staff over the next six months, highlighting an increase in confidence in the sector. The survey is taken as showing that efforts to rebalance the economy are beginning to bear fruit.

The report says that the UK confidence index has surged by 11 points to over 30 per cent, well above the historic average of 21 per cent. And 50 per cent of firms are anticipating growth through the second half of the year, compared with just 14 per cent who are expecting sales to fall.

This growth comes despite a levelling out of exports, and weak export prospects to Europe in particular. What it highlights, then, is the strength of the domestic market.
