Michell Instruments celebrates 40 years of innovationPrecision sensor and instrumentation manufacturer, Michell Instruments, is celebrating 40 years of business this year. Established in 1974 in Cambridge, UK, the company started off in a small building with just a couple of employees but now has three manufacturing locations and offices in ten countries. Michell has always placed importance on research and development. This led not only to pioneering work in the field of humidity calibration with the National Physical Laboratory and the development of a fully automatic method to reliably measure hydrocarbon dew point, but also in the world's first two-wire dew-point transmitter which made trace moisture measurements quick, simple and accessible for a huge range of applications.
The growing awareness in manufacturing and other industries of the benefits of monitoring moisture for energy efficiency, safety and quality boosted Michell's growth. In the 1990s, Michell started to expand into Europe opening offices in Germany and the Netherlands. This was followed by more rapid world-wide growth in the first years of the 21st Century with offices in France, China, Japan, Italy, the US, Middle East and Brazil. The manufacturing side of the company grew to keep pace with demand for the products. Manufacturing capacity was added in Europe with the acquisition of two relative humidity manufacturers in the Netherlands and France. After moving to a purpose-built office and factory in Ely, Cambridgeshire in 2007, Michell extended this to double the space from 30,000 sq ft to 60,000 sq ft in 2011.
Looking to the future, Michell is working to introduce new sensing technologies to its portfolio. These include tuneable laser diode analyzers to measure moisture in natural gas, a new generation of quartz crystal microbalance sensor as well as new techniques for measuring oxygen and other gases.
