Micro miniature LVDT package

Micro miniature LVDT package Active Sensors was recently approached to design an LVDT for a challenging application on a World Rally Car. As well as the all-important ability to operate accurately in a hostile environment where high levels of temperature and vibration are commonplace, it was critical that the sensor was designed with other strict parameters in mind. In particular, it needed: 8mm diameter housing with a flange mounting; an electrical stroke of 12.7mm (+/-6.35mm); non linearity of better than +/-1.5 percent; and body length of only 29.9mm. The initial test winding showed that not only could we meet all of the clients criteria, we could actually improve it, achieving a non-linearity of better than +/-1 percent which, on a unit so small, was a huge achievement.
