Miniature rugged draw-wire sensors for fast movements and short displacements Precision sensor manufacturer Micro-Epsilon has developed a range of miniature rugged draw-wire sensors, which are suitable for harsh applications characterised by fast movements, short displacements and limited space.

The new MPM series of draw-wire sensors are used, for example, in automotive R&D applications such as on-road chassis testing. Here, the sensors are installed in parallel with the on-vehicle shock absorbers, where they measure the absorber displacements (movements) caused by the road surface. The displacement signal is then used to calculate vibration velocity and acceleration for the shock absorber. This measurement data provides developers with valuable information about the properties of a chassis.

Compact and rugged, MPM series sensors are protected to IP65 and are able to withstand mechanical shocks up to 50g (20ms) and wire acceleration up to 100g. The compactness of the sensors is achieved by using miniaturised components and high resolution, hybrid potentiometers. The sensors have an aluminium housing and use a stainless steel draw wire. The sensors can operate in ambient temperatures from -20 deg C to +80 deg C.

The MPM series is available in three measuring ranges: 50mm, 100mm and 250mm. Mounting of the sensor is made easier by using a swivel flange that operates in two axes (180 and 360 degrees). High speed measurements are possible with wire acceleration up to 100g. Maximum linearity is +/- 0.125mm.
