Whilst bringing substantial benefits, progress can also sometimes be troublesome. The footprint of drives has become smaller, and while beneficial in terms of control panel real estate, those reduced dimensions equally can be a problem for OEMs and users alike, particularly when it comes to replacing or upgrading a product, when downtime costs a lot money.

Responding to requests from major drives users and OEMs following the introduction of the compact new AutomationDrive FC series, Danfoss has designed a range of adapter plates that enables the mounting holes of all of the previous VLT 3000, 5000, 6000 and 8000 drives to be used to mount the more compact FC series drives.

Compatibility with serial communications is equally critical and Danfoss has also developed a special Profibus module for the FC series that mimics the VLT 3000 series with Profibus, making it possible for personnel without PLC programming experience easily to substitute an FC series drive with Profibus for a failed VLT 3000 with Profibus. A similar Profibus adapter module is in development for VLT 5000 drives which are used in thousands by some companies.
