Omron enhances the world's first industrial 'slim' relay

As the first to introduce an industrial 6 mm 'slim' relay, Omron now introduces a relay that offers a more superior performance and greater reliability than any other industrial relay currently available in a slim format.

The new G3RV Industrial Slim Relay is compatible with Omron's highly popular G2RV series of 6 mm slim plug-in relays and shares many of its benefits. However, there are fundamental differences that make it superior to all other slim-format relays for industrial applications. This key difference is related to the intrinsic relay design.

Although electro-mechanical relays have been around for a long time, they use moving parts to switch power to and from the load. These parts eventually wear out and result in failure of the relay. The new G3RV performs the same function, but is a solid-state relay with no moving parts and therefore has a much higher life expectancy - up to 20 times that of an electro-mechanical relay.

Besides longer life, the G3RV's absence of moving parts also offers the advantage of increased reliability. For instance, contact bounce, which can cause imprecise switching and circuit failure in electro-mechanical relays, is totally eliminated. Furthermore, the response speed of the G3RV is vastly superior with switching times of just a few milliseconds - the time required to power the LED on and off.

Other advantages of the G3RV compared with electro-mechanical relays include a high inrush current capability, high surge current ratings, high isolation voltage, quiet operation with excellent EMI noise reduction and most importantly, no possibility of failure through contacts arcing or welding. In addition, power switching in G3RV relays with DC outputs is managed by a MOSFET output, which has ideal heat dissipation characteristics.

As well as being slim and thus saving panel space, G3RV relays ensure a sturdy and reliable connection by having a large contact area and non-bendable pins. Connection to a PLC is easy and achieved faultlessly in a few seconds via click connectors and indication of the relays energized state is easily visible via an LED.

The G3RV is available in a wide range of ratings and with either screw or push-in terminals.
