Performance lubricants cut bearing failures

An engineer tasked with minimising production losses would have to look very carefully at the impact of incorrect lubrication, which estimates suggest can account for 30 percent of equipment downtime in certain industries. Lubrication is usually added to a long list of other tasks when maintenance is planned into the production schedule, because it is often the only opportunity to get access to equipment in order to grease vital components such as bearings. Achieving a 'component estimated fatigue life' for bearings under a variety of operating conditions is difficult, if not impossible, although one certain way not to achieve life expectancy is through improper lubrication. Castrol believes the alternative is to change to performance lubricants, which can be carefully matched to operating conditions in order to minimise bearing wear and maximise life between repairs and replacement. This was demonstrated to a manufacturing company that was experiencing an average of 28 cooler fan bearing failures annually. The failures, which seriously affected plant production and the efficiency of the company's maintenance department, had been a problem for so long that they were considered a normal operating condition.
