Positioning with microwaves By offering a microwave sensor in a pneumatic cylinder, Festo is opening up entirely new possibilities in harsh environments. This sensor is claimed as the first in the world to offer non-length dependent displacement measurement for pneumatic or hydraulic linear drives. The sensor also provides important facilities such as diagnostics, process monitoring and 'plug and work'. "The unique feature is the integration of a sensor into the end face of a pneumatic linear drive, where it continuously measures piston position and speed across the entire cylinder stroke range," explains Armin Seltz, head of Festo's sensors business unit. In the system, a simple antenna system is used to feed electromagnetic waves into the cylinder barrel. These waves are reflected by the piston. The reflected signal is compared with the transmitted signal, and the position of the piston derived.
