Powerful, precise option for linear positioning tasks A linear stepper actuator is a linear motion device built around a stepper motor, but with the rotor tapped and the conventional shaft replaced by a precision screw. Tapping the rotor effectively turns it into a precision nut; as the rotor rotates, linear motion is generated by the screw rotating up and down the nut.

Linear stepper actuators deliver fast, powerful and precise positioning. The proven construction simplifies machine design by reducing the number of required external mechanical components. Easy to integrate, these self contained actuators eliminate the need for couplings and guides.

Selection considerations for linear stepper actuators include stroke length, duty cycle, load and power factor. As with all stepper motors, engineers must also consider the mode in which the motor should run: full step, half step or micro step. Micro stepping mode delivers the smoothest motion and the highest resolution.

Linear stepper actuators can be operated over a wide speed range and can drive almost any load. They are ideal for applications requiring a combination of precise positioning, rapid motion and long life. Advantages include high resolution and accuracy, high force output and long stroke lengths. Typical applications include medical equipment, linear XY Tables, semiconductor handling, clinical diagnostics equipment, laboratory automation, industrial automation and valve actuators in HVAC equipment.

Motion Control Products offers a unique design of hybrid linear stepper motor actuators that deliver high performance and exceptional endurance in a very small package. The motor incorporates thermoplastics in the rotor drive nut and a stainless steel acme lead screw, which allows the linear actuator to be much quieter, more efficient and more durable. The range is offered with either captive or non-captive formats with a range of lengths and resolutions with an extremely competitive price.

The MCP range of hybrid linear actuators come in six sizes, from 20mm square to 86mm square corresponding to NEMA size 8, size 11, size 14, size 17, size 23, and size 34. Each size has three designs available - captive, non-captive and an external linear version.

There are over twenty different travels per step available, from 0.00006 inch (0.001524mm) to 0.005 inch (0.127mm). Micro stepping can be used for even finer resolution.
