Reliable brakes for linear axes, tested by TÜV

Suspended loads in machines and systems represent a substantial risk potential – in particular when people stand beneath them. With the ROBA-linearstop, Mayr Power Transmission has long provided a full-quality safety brake for gravity-loaded axes which has been tested by the TÜV. Now, the company has also had its pneumatic clamping unit certified by the TÜV Süd. 

In addition to the required test criteria for holding brakes, 100 dynamic braking procedures were conducted – and the brakes were also easily able to fulfil these requirements. 

On gravity-loaded axes in machines and systems, there is also a potential risk crashing loads. In order to protect people and materials reliably against injury and damage in spite of this risk, safety brakes produced in accordance with the fail-safe principle are used. These brakes are closed in de-energised condition. They generate the braking force through thrust springs. In order to secure gravity-loaded axes, linear brakes, amongst other products, are particularly effective, as they take effect on separate brake rods, independent of the drive line. Therefore, no toothed belts, couplings or spindle nuts are located in the safety line of the brake. 

The linear brakes available on the market today usually function as static clamping units and are designed to hold the axes safely at a standstill. However, people may remain under suspended loads during operation, maintenance or even during the production process, without the load transfer having been made onto the mechanical linear brake. 

If the drive were to fail completely in these operating conditions, the linear brake alone would be responsible for the reliable deceleration of the load. Therefore, the ROBA-linearstop clamping units from Mayr are dimensioned so that they are also suitable for emergency braking procedures. 

“In addition to the required testing criteria for holding brakes, we have conducted 100 dynamic braking actions,” explains Bernd Kees, product manager at Mayr. “This test, which is not normally part of the TÜV test for holding brakes, was important to us, as dynamic braking actions occur repeatedly in practical application.” The pneumatic clamping unit was tested under realistic conditions, and was able to fulfil all the requirements without any trouble at all. 

In addition to the pneumatic holding brake, Mayr offers another pneumatic version of the linear brake, which has for some time been inspected and confirmed by TÜV Süd as a full-quality dynamic braking device. It easily fulfils the basic test principles for emergency braking actions by the BIA. This basic test principle defines 1 million switchings, both with load transfer and without, as well as an additional 1000 dynamic braking actions.
