Three phases are better than two

Recent developments at Japan Servo has allowed small drives specialist EMS to offer the advantages of three-phase stepping motors. Stepping motors are designed to step change their rotor position to generate controlled and repeatable rotary motion. However this results in some undesirable characteristics, which the three-phase construction can reduce significantly. In noise sensitive applications such as medical drives, they offer lower noise. Where smooth running is needed they offer less cogging and higher accuracy. These are coupled to higher torque for a given size of motor and simpler drive electronics in bipolar mode. The advantages easily outweigh the small cost penalty, and it is anticipated that as their market penetration increases and the volume manufactured rises, economies of scale will make them similar in price to two-phase units.
