Trumpf fires up laser lightning rod in Swiss Alps

Trumpf and the University of Geneva have fired up a laser-based lightning rod at the top of Säntis mountain in Switzerland. Over the next few weeks, the researchers will be using this powerful system to conduct a series of weather experiments. Their aim is to control lightning from storm clouds and direct the strikes to places where they won’t cause any damage.

Preventive maintenance helps prevent damage

WOB-Wessling Oberflächenveredelung (WOB) operates the largest special plant for contract coating in Europe. In a workshop of around 22,000 square meters, hanging cranes provide fully automatic transport for the parts weighing up to 9.5 tons. The gigantic plant includes several cable carriers from Tsubaki Kabelschlepp, which are inspected and serviced by the manufacturer as part of its exclusive maintenance service. This allows WOB to reduce risks and prevent downtimes.

New bearings made of iglidur W360 high-performance plastic ensure precise and easy linear movements

The new iglidur W360CM series linear bearings from Igus are designed to slide on round shafts with high precision. The linear bearing consists of an aluminium housing and a polymer liner, which ensures high accuracy. The design allows precise movement. By using iglidur W360 high-performance polymers, no external lubrication is needed. The dimensions of the new bearings are interchangeable with metallic linear ball bearings, so that they can be easily converted to a 1:1 ratio providing the correct technical considerations are observed.
