EMI shielding material for medical device enclosures

Chomerics Europe says Soft-Shield 4850 represents the latest advancement in EMI shielding gaskets based on multi-planar Z-axis conductive foam technology. The material is based on the unique integration of electrically conductive silver-plated fibres into a low density urethane foam, providing the basis for a performance-driven, cost-effective EMI shielding solution. Conventional approaches use nickel to provide electrical conductivity, but contact with nickel, commonly used in shielded gasket materials, has been shown to cause an allergic reaction in some people and can result in dermatitis.

Through the optimisation of the conductive fibre construction, loading and dispersion within the foam matrix, Soft-Shield 4850 provides superb Z-axis conductivity with extremely short ground paths. Since the integrity of the base foam is uncompromised, Soft-Shield 4850 is said to offer exceptional physical and mechanical properties. The material provides a low-closure-force with good through-resistance and compression set properties, and offers a shielding effectiveness of 95dB average. This makes it a suitable gasket and shielding solution for portable medical equipment enclosures. A selectively coated pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) can be specified to help simplify and speed assembly.

The material is supplied in custom profiles as well as rectangular or square strip gasket seals in bulk roll form. Operating temperature range is -40degC to +70degC.
