Engineering services set drive systems apart at Medical Technology Ireland

Electric drive system specialist maxon will present its engineering capabilities for Class II and III medical device manufacturers at Medical Technology Ireland 2026. The Swiss brand will demonstrate its complete drive systems supported by comprehensive engineering services for integration within high-value, precision medical devices.

maxon's precision drive systems, comprising motors, gears, brakes, sensors, and controls, are developed for the demands of medium- and high-risk medical devices. At the exhibition, maxon's engineers will explain how the drive systems achieve optimum performance and high repeatability, with efficient development that integrates with OEM engineering requirements and timescales.

maxon develops drive systems for medical applications including active implants, surgical robots, pumps and medication delivery, catheter and endoscopic systems, imaging and diagnostic equipment, as well as handheld surgical tools, and prosthetics and rehabilitation equipment.

An advantage for medical device manufacturers in Ireland is maxon's local support, headed by maxon's lead sales engineer for Ireland, Martin Leahy. The Ireland team can guide design ideation, and beyond this, OEMs are supported throughout a project by maxon's dedicated medical engineering department, based at maxon's headquarters in Switzerland. This partnership enables complete flexibility in design, from customisable off-the-shelf products through to fully customised drive systems, while scalable production supports high-volume manufacture.

At Medical Technology Ireland, Martin will be joined by Matthew Dean, maxon UK & Ireland's head of medical technology, to highlight specialised drive systems including robot joints for surgical robots, designed for precision and efficiency. The highest levels of compactness and torque density will be shown with maxon's drives for active implants. maxon will also demonstrate its design and manufacturing capabilities with ceramics injection moulding (CIM), which can replace metallic components to extend lifetime and provide an alternative for environments with high magnetic fields.

maxon distinguishes itself through rigorous adherence to standards for the medical sector, including manufacturing customised drive systems to ISO 13485 and developing solutions in compliance with Medical Device Regulations (MDR), with full traceability of raw materials and processes. Assembly takes place in a clean room environment according to GMP standards, and maxon can also meet ISO class 8 for customised components.
