Manufacturers return to growth as exports pick up
Manufacturing production rose for the first time in two years, as overseas demand for UK-made goods increased and stock reductions eased, says the CBI. The business group's latest quarterly Industrial Trends Survey revealed a stronger-than-expected rise in output in the three months to January. Of the 461 manufacturers surveyed, 31% said output rose during the three month period, while only 20% said it fell. The resulting balance of 11% is the strongest figure since January 2007.
Further £5 million investment to strengthen manufacturing
The Technology Strategy Board has signalled the government's commitment to supporting innovation in high value manufacturing by announcing investment of £5 million in 22 new research and development feasibility projects. This is the third investment by the Board in high value manufacturing during the last 18 months and brings the total invested by the government-funded organisation in this area to nearly £50 million in over 80 projects.
Apprentices key to long-term recovery
New figures from Semta, the Sector Skills Council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies, reveal that the number of 16-24 year olds embarking on engineering apprenticeships have increased by more than 10% in the last twelve months, despite the economical downturn. Bill Twigg, Development Director at Semta, comments: "Many experts believe that a sustained recovery will need to be export led. In order to achieve this, UK manufacturing and engineering firms will need to be able to compete against overseas competition. They can only do this with the help of a highly skilled workforce."
