The cable carrier guides the vertical cables and hoses on the drill mast, reliably keeping cables, hydraulics and fluid hoses in place. The solution was developed in close coordination between the two teams - from calculating the chain pre-tension to configuring the special stay variants.

With a motor power of 250 kW, nine hydraulic circuits, a newly developed drill mast (with a pullback force of up to 220 kN), and an innovative double-head drive, the new KR 717-3GW crawler drilling rig from KLEMM is among the most powerful in its class. But despite its impressive power, it is compact and easy to manoeuvre. The clever energy and cable/hose management enables flexible operation of the drilling rig on a small footprint. For the implementation, KLEMM cooperated with the specialists from TSUBAKI KABELSCHLEPP.

Highest stability with maximum use of space

The customised steel cable carrier type S1800 is part of the S series from TSUBAKI KABELSCHLEPP and is designed for rough environments and the highest strains. It is made of galvanized steel and is equipped with highly sturdy link plates, each consisting of two individual elements, these plates enable extensive unsupported lengths even with high additional loads. The jointed design with multi stroke system and hardened bolts, stay systems with threaded connections, and solid end connectors make this steel cable carrier durable.

The stay variant used is the RM stay. This solid aluminium frame stay is attached with threaded connections on both sides and is suitable for high loads and maximum cable carrier widths. The stays can be customized based on a 1 mm grid and the threaded connections can easily be released from inside and outside.

In addition to this, an aluminium stay based on the LG series from TSUBAKI KABELSCHLEPP is used on the inner radius of the cable carrier as a mounting frame stay. This created additional space without increasing the width of the cable carrier. The aluminium alloy used here has particularly good gliding properties, which has a positive impact on the service life of the cables and hoses.

Optimum coordination of additional loads and chain pre-tension

The customised configuration of the steel cable carrier and the close cooperation between the project teams from both companies were crucial to the success of the project. "We developed a special variant for KLEMM, which is the typical process for most cable carriers in this industry," explains Andre Kapp from Technical Field Service at TSUBAKI KABELSCHLEPP.

"The key aspects are the optimum coordination between additional load and chain pre-tension, which is determined with special computation methods. The mounting frame stay is a special solution that was developed and implemented by our engineers based on the customer's requirements."

For both partners, this project is the starting point for future collaborations. KLEMM is already investigating whether other machine series could also be equipped with steel cable carriers. The objective here is to further improve the stability and durability of the drilling equipment.
