Improving efficiency by developing pumps for higher temperature systems

The technology to exploit renewable energy sources is continuing to advance, improving efficiency and reducing costs. In concentrated solar power plants with central tower and molten salt, the sun’s energy is used to raise the temperature of molten salts, which are pumped to a steam generator that powers a turbine. The efficiency of this process can be improved if the working temperature is increased and this has led to a large-scale project to develop the corresponding pump technology.

New O-frame inline thickness measurement system

Precision sensor supplier Micro-Epsilon has extended its thicknessGAUGE range of inline thickness measurement systems with an O-frame version for precise thickness measurements of plastic strip, coatings, film and sheet materials, up to 3mm thick and for web widths up to a maximum of 1,250mm. The complete ‘out-of-the-box’ solution for thickness gauging and quality control comprises a compact, sturdy base frame, an integrated control cabinet and an aluminium measuring roller.

Mechanical fibre optic switches from Laser Components

Fibre optic switches based on mechanical technology such as micro-mechanical that self-aligns a fibre directly to another fibre offer many application advantages. For the majority of applications there are many performance benefits over other fibre optic switch technologies. For example, micro-mechanical versions with a small gap between fibres that can be filled with index-matching liquid making them well suited for LiDAR and reflective sensor monitoring systems.
