Yokogawa invests in Japan-based startup CyberneX

Yokogawa has invested in CyberneX, a Japan-based startup that has developed a compact, lightweight, and high-performance earphone-type device capable of measuring brainwaves in real time. CyberneX and Yokogawa will collaborate in the conduct of empirical research with the aim of constructing a platform for the visualisation of information on the mental states of individuals, based on brainwave data. The companies will work to develop applications that will lead to the effective utilisation of this technology by industry and society.

Spherical roller bearings overcome challenges of continuous casting

The bearings used in continuous casting machines have to endure arduous operating conditions that include high temperatures, heavy loads, ultra-low speeds, water/water vapour and scale. As a result, bearing failures such as wear, flaking and fracture are commonplace, which NSK claims is prompting increasing numbers of steel manufacturing plants to adopt its SWR (Super Wear Resistant) spherical roller bearings. These advanced bearings are said to provide several times more wear resistance, flaking life and outer ring toughness than standard counterparts made from AISI 52100 bearing steel.

Putting the spring back into manufacturing equipment

It doesn’t take long to find videos of springs being manufactured. The process is almost hypnotic as a series of carefully choreographed motions bend, twist, and form wire into tension, torsion, and compression springs. The equipment used to form these essential metal parts, which are integrated into everything from beds and doors to cars and home appliances, requires significant investment. Hence, when a spring former shows signs of aging, retrofitting to a more modern CNC-controlled system is one potential option.
