Machined springs and wire springs compared

Machined springs and wire springs compared

Wire springs date back to before the Industrial Revolution. They established their value immediately, and have not wavered from that most useful course. Certainly, enhancements in materials and manufacturing have been forthcoming, but the basic concept has not changed much. Spring wire coiled hot or cold with ends configured within the limits of coil wire has proven to be a very cost effective, industrial tool that exhibits elasticity within the bounds of known engineering understanding. Uses range from deep ocean applications to man’s reach into the universe.

Keeping the finishing line in sight

Keeping the finishing line in sight

The Sydney Opera House turned out to be one of the most disastrous construction projects in history, running vastly over time and budget. Here Kevin Cook of Intertronics gives his top tips for ensuring a prototype can be turned into an efficiently manufactured product.

When is a screw not a screw? When it

When is a screw not a screw? When it"s a coated fastener

The latest technological innovations reach a wide variety of industries and components, even revolutionising the humble screw. Many industries now require that fasteners have increased strength, resistance to extreme temperatures, smoother surfaces and lower friction.

How to choose a screw drive

How to choose a screw drive

Anyone regularly using simple slotted drive screws – with a traditional straight bladed screwdriver, will be aware of its shortcomings, and with a power driver then even more so. The old-style slotted drive will “cam-out” easily, is almost impossible to centre and if the tool or slot is even slightly worn, then is extremely different to install or remove. Consequently, with the need in industry for a faster, more reliable approach a variety of different styles are now available.

Light curing adhesives

Light curing adhesives

Design engineers will earn the gratitude of their production engineering colleagues if they can specify or allow for a light curing adhesive. Light curing adhesives can provide very significant performance and process advantages. “Designing-In Light Curing Adhesives” offers some considerations for design engineers.

Calculating the estimated fatigue life of a disc spring

Calculating the estimated fatigue life of a disc spring

Disc springs are extremely useful components in a wide range of applications, being able to be statically loaded either continuously or intermittently, or dynamically subjected to continuous load cycling. And they can be used singly or in multiples, stacked parallel, in series or in a combination thereof. But perhaps what makes them unique is that, based on standardised calculations, the deflection for a given load is predictable and the minimum life cycle can be determined. Here we look at how.

Custom valve springs increase safety in saturation diving

Custom valve springs increase safety in saturation diving

A valve spring is a critical component in a new system that meets the needs for more advanced ‘bailout technologies’ to provide divers with an extended supply of emergency breathing gas in the even of a primary failure, delivering 45 minutes of emergency life support at a depth of 120 metres.
