Dates announced for World's first machinery safety certification

Compliance and safety experts Laidler Associates have announced course dates for the unique University Certificate in Professional Development (UPCD) in Machinery Safety - the first certification of its kind in the world. The UPCD was launched recently in conjunction with the University of Teesside - it forms part of the University's engineering degree faculty, and is also part of the Laidler's training services expansion. It will make use of Laidler's virtual reality technology - which means that it can put a fully functional machine into any training room anywhere in the world.

The University, which is renowned for offering a vibrant, innovative environment dedicated to pursuing excellence, embraced the course. Alan Shaw, Senior Lecturer in Manufacturing said: "This course can benefit students by providing them with a formal introduction to the issue of Machine Safety, from both a technical and a legal standpoint in Europe. It will fulfil the requirement of Continuing Professional Development for those involved in Machinery Provision, Maintenance, and Use'. For students studying Engineering, this University Accredited module gives them an opportunity to gain useful important knowledge, backed up with the practical experience of this specialist training organisation."

The certificate, as with many of the company's training services, is in direct response to industry's need for training in critical areas of safety such as CE marking and PUWER (Provision and use of Work Equipment Regulations). 'The Health and Safety Executive is frequently reminding businesses to make sure they fully understand and comply with safety laws - the headlines often reflect unforgivable lapses that result in injuries and even fatalities - but there is a regrettable lack of safety training available,' said Chris Norris, marketing manager at Laidler Associates.

To address that issue, the UCPD in Machinery Safety is a qualification that reflects a high level of risk assessment capabilities as well as effective safety training. The five-day course includes risk assessment, an introduction to work equipment inspections and CE marking assessments, and application of standards. The UCPD comes with 30 university credits, which can be used towards additional formal qualifications, and courses will be run across the UK. Dates so far confirmed are: April 27 (Midlands), May 18 (South East), June 29, September 28, October 26, and November 23.
