Gas springs deliver a competitive advantage for student racing team

Ace industrial gas springs have found a new application in motorsports – not with a Formula 1 team, but with a group of innovative students. The Hawks Racing eV team competes in Formula Student and comprises students from Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, better known as HAW Hamburg. When building their tenth-generation car, the team added standard helical springs beneath the pedals, but were not satisfied with the feel of these, or the levels of vibration they felt. They replaced the springs with Ace industrial gas springs – selecting GS-15-40-BB-120 gas springs for being able to apply a force of 150N in a stroke length of just 40mm – and the vehicle, known as the ‘H0X’, was transformed.

With the Ace gas springs in place, the drivers are able to accelerate firmly, without experiencing unwelcome vibration feedback from the pedal due to its direct connection with the suspension of the car.

Nathaneal Peltzer in charge of aerodynamics said: “The use of gas springs is a quantum leap. This is reflected in both safety and lap times. Our drivers are also reporting that they feel much better in our H0X – not only in critical driving situations.”
