Getting a new lease of life

The worldwide growth in the popularity of historic vehicles, both for competition and leisure use has risen dramatically in recent years. But keeping these vehicles on the road represents something of a challenge: unfortunately many of the original manufacturers have little or no interest in providing spare parts or support for vehicles which are no longer in production. The good news, however, is that specialist manufacturers such as Tandler have stepped in to fill the gap.

Getting a new lease of life

A growing market for Tandler is supplying gears for historic vehicles. Drawings from the manufacturers are generally not available, so Tandler has to produce gears from samples supplied by the customers. In some cases Tandler says it will produce like for like, but in many instances, customers require special, non-standard ratios, particularly for racing and rallying. For these projects the company redesigns the gears to fit the original casings ensuring no further modifications are required.

Typically Tandler produces these gears in small batches of five or ten. Some vehicles however are extremely rare, so the company is quite happy to produce gears on a one-off basis.

All the manufacturing processes, including heat treatment, are contained within the Tandler factory, ensuring that the company has full control over every aspect of production at all times. Recent projects include the production of special ratio crown wheel and pinions for various Ferraris, Maseratis, Porsches and Aston Martins. And Tandler also reports that it is supporting Michael Keuke, driving a Porsche 3.0 Carrera RS, in the German Historic Race and Rally Series.
