Liquid cooled servo motors deliver double the power

Through use of ingenious design and manufacturing techniques SEM has added an integral cooling jacket to its motors, without any significant increase in size of the motor housing, while at the same time increasing stall torque on its 190 frame models to 134Nm with output power rising to 29kW. These figures represent nearly a three-fold increase in power density compared to SEM's standard air cooled servomotors.

>"In developing these liquid cooled servo motors we have addressed a number of issues that were being raised by customers," says SEM's Steve Jackson. "In particular, where motors are used in precision applications, such as machine tools, they may wish to limit the heat that the motor generates and, in turn, maintain a steady ambient temperature.  This will help to overcome problems associated with temperature fluctuations during operation of machines that may be working to micron tolerances."

>The new series is compatible with existing motors and uses industry standard flanges, customers are able to select from a variety of feedback devices from resolver through to high precision encoders.  Additionally wide choices of options are available including various holding brakes and thermal sensors.

>Applications for the HW liquid cooled servo motors are varied, with their high power being ideally suited to the plastic injection moulding machine and machine tool sectors. The increased high dynamics make the motors especially suitable for high speed positioning and packaging systems, servo pump drives, and punch presses.

>In developing this series of liquid cooled servo motors SEM has created a dynamic, high power, range that provides numerous opportunities for machine and system designers to enhance their products and provide higher performance and accuracy. The negligible increase in size created by the integral, and innovative, cooling jacket will also permit their use in existing machine and system designs.
