Machine builders can streamline design and build while boosting machine reliability for customers with Schneider Electric's new input/output (I/O) system for data aggregation.
Schneider Electric's new Modicon Edge I/O Network Terminal Slice (NTS) is a future-ready platform for OEMs developing smart machines that integrate with edge devices and IIoT technology, preparing customers for the future.
The modular system brings reliability, scalability and future proofing to data handling across multiple industrial segments, including smart machines, packaging, food and beverage, life sciences, water and wastewater, mining, minerals and metals, critical infrastructure, and energy and chemicals. It's also compliant with arduous marine and railway standards.
OEMs can use a dedicated online configurator tool to develop designs for I/O islands with all the analogue and digital input and outputs, power and communications their machines need. This enables machine builders to tailor their I/O configuration without re-engineering. In turn, the configurator will provide a full Bill of Materials (BOM), including all optional accessories, along with 2D and 3D drawings and fully dimensioned 360-degree views. The unique BOM can then be moved to the shopping basket for price and availability information.
Out-of-the-box compatibility for machine builders
The Modicon Edge I/O NTS meets the needs of any application as a single I/O family that supports multiple Ethernet communications protocols. It integrates with software platforms such as EcoStruxure Machine, Control and Automation Expert, enabling OEMs to build scalable and adaptable solutions for future addition of new connected assets.
A web interface provides remote access, which is helpful for machine builders during test and commissioning. Remote access is also helpful during machine life as it enables lifetime service support. Furthermore, as a compact solution, the I/O solution fits more functionality into smaller enclosures, saving space for the customer.
Protecting uptime for machine owners
Physically, the Modicon Edge I/O NTS is robust enough to provide high reliability in applications where unplanned downtime is costly. In addition, its modules are hot-swappable with no restrictions, which will keep communication online even while a service professional replaces multiple and adjacent modules.
Cybersecurity
OEMs can deliver cybersecurity for customers through the Modicon Edge I/O NTS's compliance with IEC 62443-4-2, which includes role-based access control. Keeping assets secure is vital for digital transformation and protecting data will avoid the costly result of cyber attacks that can hinder efficiency, agility, or sustainability goals.
Future-proofing machines
OEMs are well versed in solving challenges, deploying their expertise to create smart machines that will serve the future while integrating into today's facilities.
As the latest addition to Schneider Electric's Modicon family, the Modicon Edge I/O supports this vision with ease of integration, high performance, reliability and cybersecurity.
The new online Schneider Electric product configurator allows OEMs to select the right PLC and I/O solutions easily, for any customer application.
