Big investment boost for the UK's automotive industry

Jaguar Land Rover has announced plans to invest some £600m in the UK, with the lion's share spent at its Castle Bromwich plant to support the introduction of the new XF, with advanced vehicle manufacturing facilities and a state-of-the-art aluminium body shop.

In addition to the investment at Castle Bromwich, Jaguar Land Rover also announced this week that it will double the size of its Advanced Design and Engineering Centre in Whitley for the creation of innovative new ultra low emission vehicles.

At the same time, the London Taxi Company reports that it will create 1,000 new jobs following £250m investment from owner Geely. The investment will include the introduction of a new apprentice scheme to prepare for the introduction of electrification technology.

The SMMT reports that the new facility in Coventry will see production ramp up to 36,000 vehicles a year by 2018, a ten-fold increase on the company's current capacity. The London Taxi Company also announced that these new vehicles, which start production in 2017, will be manufactured using a significantly increased proportion of components from the UK and European supply chain.
