Not just closed - sealed: compression latches for tough applications

Standard latches are not up to the job when high IP protection classes, vibrations and tight manufacturing tolerances matter. Compression latches are used when a defined sealing compression is required in addition to the closing function. EMKA has evaluated the recent market demand and identified three typical requirement profiles.

Compression latches are designed to be vibration-resistant and offer up to 6 mm of compression distance. They are used wherever flaps or doors must not only close but also be locked tightly with a defined compression - in a reproducible manner, even if vibrations are present.

The range of applications is wide: from rail and commercial vehicle manufacturing to wind turbines, mechanical and plant engineering, and outdoor and offshore applications. This is why EMKA is offering compression latches in three systems and approximately 190 standard variants as well as many special variants depending on the version. "Our experience shows that three models in particular are in high demand because they reliably meet typical requirements in many applications," explains Thomas Dettmar, Head of Product Management at EMKA.

Three locks, three requirement profiles

Different projects have different requirements. In many applications, the operating mode is predetermined, for example, by the end customer's requirements or by established operating and service processes. For this application, the short-shaft compression latch is a proven standard: robust and easy to install.

In other cases, the installation depth and manufacturing tolerances determine the choice. If the door and frame are from different production runs or if the seal compression needs to be readjusted, adaptability is crucial, also to reduce the number of variants used. The compression latch with a slot-operated mechanism and a long shaft provides the necessary adjustment range and makes it easier to adjust the cam height. And when many latches need to be checked during operation, the optical status indicator becomes a key factor for safety and maintenance. Particularly in safety-critical applications such as rail transportation or wind turbines, it must be possible to immediately see whether a latch is properly closed. The compression latch with a visual status and rotation direction indicator meets these requirements, enabling quick and unambiguous visual inspection during operation and maintenance.

All three versions are made of die-cast zinc and finished with a black powder coat - a proven standard for rugged applications. This ensures that specific design, assembly, and operational requirements can be met, and provides designers with clear guidance for selecting the right compression latch.
