The MagPowr range of magnetic particle clutches and brakes, available exclusively from Warwick based Motion Drives and Controls, provide excellent characteristics for precise web tension control, especially where the material is delicate. The simple, yet effective, operating principle of the MagPowr clutch involves coupling a drive cylinder to an output rotor with magnetic particles that are activated and controlled with current via a series of coils arranged at the periphery of the assembly. As current is increased, the field strength increases the torque capacity of the clutch.
The benefits of a magnetic coupling system include constant torque throughout the speed range, even at zero speeds. Torque is fully proportional to current and the smooth motion is repeatable, guaranteeing consistent results. As long as the load torque requirements are less than the torque setting in the clutch, the drive and load are 100% coupled with no slip. Slip will occur when the clutch torque is commanded to a level equal to or less than the load requirements.
The silent operation, long life expectancy and dependable torque transmission characteristics of the magnetic particle clutch make it perfect for cycling and overload applications, particularly for web tension control on thin or delicate materials that tend to stretch under load and for most non-woven materials. The complete range of MagPowr clutches and brakes covers input speeds between 34rpm and over 3000rpm, with torque ratings from 1Nm to 135Nm. Clutches and brakes from simple open-loop unwind to fully integrated closed-loop tension control systems are available in a variety of mounting configurations and with cooling options to improve torque transmission or braking capacity and duty cycle are available.
