A new era begins for Southern Manufacturing and Electronics

A new era begins for Southern Manufacturing and Electronics

Southern has long been one of the key shows for the introduction of new products to the UK market. But the biggest new product on show this year is not to be found on the show floor – it’s actually the building itself. 2018 will see the UK’s longest-running industrial technology show move into a new permanent home currently taking shape on its familiar Farnborough site.

The brand new £30m Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre development, now in the final stages of construction, is the largest exhibition venue to be built in the UK for 20 years. The 20,000m² Hall 1 complex, designed by award-winning architects Terence O’Rourke, offers world-class facilities, easy access and panoramic runway level views. Southern Manufacturing and Electronics will be the first large-scale event to be held in the new venue.

But while the surroundings may be new, the show itself will return in its familiar format and with its trademark wide range of exhibitors drawn from pretty much every sector of industrial enterprise. A key feature of the show is that it maintains a balance between the big-name manufacturers and smaller, less well-known firms. This helps create the show’s unique atmosphere and virtually guarantees you’ll encounter the new and unexpected. The diversity of suppliers present also means that it’s a great event for addressing multiple supply chain issues in a single visit.

Southern Manufacturing is a key event for big-ticket technologies such as machining centres. As usual, the show will host a wide selection of top marques offering live demonstrations of their latest products. Matsuura returns with two of its best-selling high quality CNC machine tools; the Matsuura MX-520, a popular entry-level single table 5 axis machine, and the Muratec Murata MT200, a multi-tasking, twin spindle turning machine with three turrets and Y axis.

XYZ Machine Tools will showcase its UMC-5X simultaneous five-axis, gantry-style, machining centre. The UMC-5X is offered at a very competitive price point, yet comes with leading-edge technology such as Traori/Kinematic functions for five-axis simultaneous machining, as well as integrated Smart Machining Technology (SMT) and thermal growth compensation. The standard control system is the popular Siemens 840DSL ShopMill Control, with the option of specifying the iTNC 640 HSCI Heidenhain system.

Heidenhain is itself a key exhibitor at Southern; this year it is underlining its commitment to Industry 4.0 by highlighting its Connected Machining system of production, in which all work steps from the design to the deliverable component are interlinked via one of the company’s TNC controls. Two-way communication with a CAM system is facilitated by Remote Desktop Manager software, while using Batch Process Manager, the operator is able to monitor the NC program and tools and schedule the execution of several production orders simultaneously.

Many other aspects of advanced manufacturing are well represented at Southern 2018. GoPrint3D, one of a number of firms exhibiting the latest 3D print technologies, will be showcasing 3D printers from a number of manufacturers including Formlabs, Markforged and Ultimaker, as well as illustrating some of the different 3D print technologies now available, such as:

Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF), often used for making quick, cost-effective models and prototypes; Stereolithography (SLA), used to show fine detail with superior quality of finish, and Continuous Fibre Filament (CFF), used for creation of ultra-strong, yet lightweight end-use parts or bespoke tools. There will also be metal parts printed on a Markforged Metal X. The Metal X uses a revolutionary technique to produce functional, pure metal parts at a fraction of the cost of traditional machining methods. This technique also allows for much greater freedom in design.

Components and OEM parts are always a big part of Southern Manufacturing and Electronics, and 2018 is no exception, with vendors converging from all over Europe and beyond. Yamaichi Electronics recently expanded the push-pull connector series Y-Circ P with the IP68-compliant waterproof T-series as a new part of the Y-Circ P circular push-pull connector family. To be seen for the first time at Southern Electronics, the new waterproof

T-series is based on the technology of the Y-Circ P product family, which can be connected to its existing circular push-pull connectors. ODU will be showing its new Mini-Snap self-securing circular connection, used in a multitude of applications. Whether for transferring power, signals, data or even media, this circular connector in a robust metal housing offers great long-term quality, reliability and functionality.

DMS technologies, an established UK battery manufacturer, will be exhibiting at Southern Manufacturing for the seventh consecutive year in 2018. The firm says it has been supporting an increasing number of UK manufacturers to re-shore their battery pack requirements, so reducing costs and offering the advantages a local supplier brings. At Southern Manufacturing 2018 DMS will be displaying a range of its small battery packs covering chemistries including NiMH, Li-Ion and LiFePO4.

Diamond Electronics the specialist distributor of HMI, interconnection, optoelectronics, and power semiconductors will be featuring a wide range of dishwasher safe, antimicrobial coated, easy to clean keyboards at the 2018 Southern Manufacturing and Electronics exhibition. The keyboards and accessories are intended for use with clean industrial applications including food processing, semiconductor manufacturing, POS systems, and home use medical systems. The iMTC range of sealed keyboards are waterproof to IP68, easy to clean and may be washed in a dishwasher. The keyboards meet medical approval EN60601-1-2 and can be supplied with an approved antimicrobial coating, nano silver or ionic silver antibacterial technology.
