At the forefront of advances in fuel cell technology

At the forefront of advances in fuel cell technology EBM-Papst is making significant advances in helping to convert fuel cell applications from laboratory standards into competitive line products. The company's energy efficient fans, blowers and pumps are playing a crucial role in the attaining the highest level of efficiency across a vast range of application areas. In particular, the main focus of the research and development is centred on achieving the greatest possible efficiency of the motor/blower unit. A combination of the low energy consumption of the latest EC drive motors and the use of optimised, highly efficient turbo-chargers ensures the highest level of efficiency is being reached across a number of initial prototypes. Working with various manufacturers involved in conventional heating and fuel cell development, EBM-Papst is focusing on developing stationary fuel cell applications for the household generation of electricity and heat. Commenting on the research into this area, technical director Geoff Lockwood says: "Based on the wide range of centrifugal blowers for the heating industry, EBM-Papst is leading the way in creating components with a performance spectrum to match the requirements of fuel cell technology. In the areas of household energy efficiency, EBM-Papst is a market leader in conventional technologies and has the wealth of engineering and expertise to make significant advances in fuel cell technology, for it to become a viable alternative form of power in the future." Other advantages of fuel cell technology are its low noise characteristics and zero emissions. This is particularly suitable for portable applications for emergency power supply or when used in closed spaces, such as tunnel construction.
