Hydraulics power two Iraqi bascule bridges

Hydraulics power two Iraqi bascule bridges Bosch Rexroth is providing the lifting power for two 120m long bascule bridges destined for Southern Iraq as part of a major infrastructure rebuilding programme. The contract, for hydraulic equipment to raise and lower the 120 tonne lifting span on each bridge, was placed by Mabey & Johnson, the world's largest supplier of panel bridging systems, in response to a commission from The State Corporation for Roads & Bridges, for fixed installations at Awasha and Qalat Salih. The scope of supply included two containerised hydraulic power units, each housing two 40kW main and a 15kW backup diesel engines; four hydraulically driven winch assemblies, each pulling 15.5 tonnes and sized to hold 23 tonnes; proportional winch control manifolds for providing acceleration and deceleration phases during bridge operation; relay logic and control panels for raising and lowering the bascule section; and connections for warning sounders, navigation and emergency lights, floodlighting and batteries. Each complete system is designed to be simple, robust and reliable, for routinely raising each bridge in seven minutes and lowering in under four minutes, as well as withstanding a harsh desert environment, with temperatures up to 51°C and wind speeds to 46m/s.
