Integrated servo system is compact

Integrated servo system is compact Reliance Precision Mechatronics now boasts the Reliance Cool Muscle 2 within its range of integrated motors. The Reliance Cool Muscle 2 (RCM2) combines a motor, encoder, driver, controller, PLC function and power Supply.

The benefits of this integrated AC servo system are the reduction in size and cost of an automated instrument, whilst reducing the development stage. Each Reliance Cool Muscle 2 is complete with its own 50,000 ppr magnetic encoder and integrated controller for precise velocity, torque and position control.

The 5,000rpm AC servo motor (which can also run as slowly as 1 revolution in 13.9 hours) produces continuous torques up to 1.09Nm (3.82Nm peak), with a maximum speed of 8,000rpm (depending on model). The Reliance Cool Muscle 2 also comes with an external torque sensor interface, which automatically changes torque output according to sensor signals, making it an ideal solution for applications that require constant tension.

Reliance Cool Muscle 2 is available in frame sizes 56 and 60 with output power 100W, 200W or 400W, and a built-in universal power supply of 100-240V AC. Reliance Cool Muscle 2 can stand alone due to its own programming language; specified functions can then be assigned to the six inputs and the four outputs using integrated functions. Hard stop homing and software limits mean that origin sensor and limit sensors can be eliminated. Position, speed, or torque can be controlled by an analogue signal. Reliance Cool Muscle 2 can also operate with a conventional pulse driver system.

The standard RS-232 interface uses a simple ASCII command set or free Coolworks Lite software to control position, velocity and torque. Clusters of Cool Muscle motors (up to 15 in total) can also be interconnected in a daisy chain arrangement to create a highly co-ordinated multi-axis system with no additional supervisory controller. Step and direction or CW/CCW signals up to 500kHz are supported, and the magnetic encoder ensures zero step loss.

Reliance Cool Muscle 2 is a highly flexible, low-cost motion system. The specialist support which Reliance also offers in conjunction with its Cool Muscle systems allows for both one off production through to medium volume end-user equipment.
