Manufacturing returning to the UK

A significantly reduced emphasis on overseas production and a return of manufacturing to the UK is one of the conclusions of a new report looking at advances in production technologies as well as rising costs and regulations abroad. The report, produced by the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce, and looking specifically at medium sized manufacturers, argues that the changing face of business will mean making more products at home. Jobs that were outsourced overseas will return to the UK.

Of course there will be difficulties, and the report questions whether the UK is ready: the economy still has to be rebalanced and skills shortages will need to be addressed. However, one conclusion is that as many as 200,000 manufacturing jobs could return to the UK, which could cut the trade deficit by as much as a third as UK produced goods replace imported products.
