Marine industry gets revolutionary hinge

Marine industry gets revolutionary hinge A gap in the market has led New Zealander Paul Edmondson, technical design consultant to the Mirabella V yacht, to pioneer a business designing unique hinges for the marine sector. Vosper Thornycroft, the company responsible for manufacturing the world’s largest single masted yacht, created a seven pivot, 35kg hinge for the Mirabella V’s 25kg bulwark door. Edmondson recognised a niche to develop this initial concept further and developed a lighter, sleeker, concealed hinge with improved functionality. The hinge had to be hidden when the bulwark door was shut, yet look good when it was open. It also needed to allow the door to self open outwards, but feel lighter for the operator. It was also important the hinge did not impede the doorway. Igus was the chosen bearing manufacturer, because its maintenance-free polymer bearings are ideal for the boat market, where oil can leave stains on teak and white fairings. Iglidur X bearings from Igus were chosen for the hinge, because of their low coefficient of friction and ability to take very high loads. Iglidur X can additionally cope with the harsh environments, salt water and high loads sea vessels have to deal with.
