Maximum precision, dynamics, durability and efficiency Regardless of whether you are aiming to speed up the 25 ton gantry of a machine tool, position a laser cutting head at 400m/min or execute welding operations with a tolerance of just 0.1mm using a jointed-arm robot, Wittenstein says its rack-and-pinion drives guarantee maximum precision, dynamics and running time, combined with optimal efficiency.

Owing to their operating principle, there is no restriction on the length of these drives, which is why they are perfect for applications with long travel distances. The fact that the racks can be sorted assures consistently high precision irrespective of the axle length.

Compared to linear drives - the traditional rival technology - rack-and-pinion drives provide clearly superior energy efficiency. Whereas in practical duty ballscrew drives and linear motors only rarely exceed the 90% efficiency mark, Wittenstein's rack-and-pinion system achieves up to 97%. The resulting energy savings are considerable, especially in applications with high duty cycles.

Wittenstein's rack and pinion drives offer maximum travel speeds of 440m/min and a maximum feed force of 47kN with a single drive. Maximum precision is 5µm using a direct measuring system, and the maximum input torque is 3654Nm.

Racks are available with 2mm to 6mm module, in lengths up to 2000mm. Total pitch deviation is up to 12µm/min. The rack and pinion drives are available with servo planetary and worm gearheads, as well as right-angle and coaxial gearhead configurations. Torsional backlash is guaranteed less than 1 arc minute, and the innovative pinion connection ensures very high rigidity. In view of the wide range of rack classes, gearhead types and pinion connections, it is possible to configure the ideal system for almost any application. Wittenstein has an extensive portfolio of gearheads, racks and pinions, and combines this with vast sizing expertise (amassed over more than a quarter of a century) plus the latest simulation and analysis tools.
