Next generation Ethernet Terminal Server targets substation network applications
GarrettCom Europe has launched its next generation Ethernet Terminal Server, providing new benchmark standards for configurability, reliability and functionality. The 10ETS terminal server combines up to eight Ethernet ports (in various fibre and copper options) with up to 32 serial ports for applications where maximum port count and diversity are key. The 10ETS addresses the needs of applications where users are looking to upgrade to IP-based networks but where large numbers of serial instruments are installed.
The ten configurable slots in the 10ETS enable users to specify the exact Ethernet and serial port combinations they require, to a maximum of 36 ports overall. The 10ETS can also be configured with an IRIG-B timing card and a selection of IRIG-B port modules, providing precision timing for remote protection devices, SCADA systems and other mission-critical instruments.
The configurability of the 10ETS is further extended by the supplied MNS-DX network management software which supports switching and routing on all the Ethernet ports and provides Modbus support for serial devices. The MNS-DX software also provides a host of advanced security features, including firewall protection that ensures data from serial devices is subjected to the same security management rules as data coming from the rest of the network.
For enhanced reliability and redundancy, the 10ETS provides the industry's first dual hot-swappable power supplies in a 1U rack mount package. Power supply options include multiple DC voltage choices, as well as universal AC. Software monitors each power supply, and can detect and signal any fault. A swap-out can then be performed while the 10ETS continues operating, without any interruption.
Target applications for the 10ETS include power substation networks, where its reliability, security and port configurability enable large operations to be integrated into Smart Grid systems. The 10ETS provides all the connectivity needed in today's more complex substations and reduces the potential points of failure in a substation communications system. It is also substation-hardened, IEC 61850-3 compliant, meeting stringent requirements for EMI, temperature and shock. It also features an advanced thermal design that results in cooler operation of the internal electronics and eliminates the need for fans.
