Optical encoders in electric car driving seat
Rotary optical encoders supplied by Heidenhain company, Renco, have enabled Zytek Electric Vehicles to develop an electric motor-gearbox that replaces the engine and drivetrain in a conventional fuel-powered vehicle. The innovative development has already been successfully applied to a Mercedes Smart car.

Using a 16-pole brushless motor with integrated electronics, the efficiency of Zytek's design relies heavily on the accuracy of the rotor position - hence the use of the Renco R35i encoders to provide high-resolution feedback for motor commutation and highly accurate velocity control.

With a maximum line count of 8,192, the R35i met Zytek's specification for integrated commutation outputs and high-resolution performance in a compact product; it has an outside diameter of only 35 mm. 

The R35i is just one of a wide range of rotary optical encoders available from Renco, an industry-leading manufacturer of a wide range of standard and bespoke rotary optical encoders.

Zytek's state-of-the-art drivetrain utilises brushless DC motor technology that integrates electric motor, power and control electronics into a single assembly that requires only three connections - for water, and high- and low-voltage (300 V and 12 V, respectively).
