Performance lubricants reduce bearing failures

Castrol Industrial advocates a change to performance lubricants to minimise bearing wear and maximise life. This was demonstrated to a manufacturing company that was experiencing an average of twenty-eight cooler fan bearing failures annually. The failures, which seriously affected plant production and the efficiency of the company’s maintenance department, had been a problem for so long that they were considered a normal operating condition. A change to Castrol Optimol Longtime PD2 eliminated the failures and reduced bearing operating temperatures by an average of 52degF. Bearings problems no longer affect production and failures are now identified as unusual conditions. Total savings attributed to reductions in maintenance, replacement parts and operating costs for the three years since the change to a performance lubricant, have been over £17,000. In another example, a cement plant that had been using six different greases (including one synthetic) from three different suppliers to lubricate bearings, realised that the practice was causing considerable confusion and leading to bearing failure due to greases being wrongly applied or mixed together. The plant’s annual bearing replacement cost was estimated at almost £20,000 - not including labour and downtime. All six greases were successfully replaced with one, Castrol high-performance grease - Molub-Alloy 860/220-2ES. In the year since then no lubricant related bearing failures have been recorded. The result is a £20,000 annual saving in spare parts alone, as well as considerable additional savings on labour costs for replacement.
