Reduce costs with effective enclosure climate control Maintaining the operating temperature of control systems can play an important role in decreasing the risk of premature component failure, optimising component life expectancy and ultimately reducing costs.

By adopting a comprehensive approach to the selection of cooling equipment, considering energy consumption, servicing and main-tenance, as well as procurement, significant benefits may be reaped. Although the use of ambient air may be the most efficient form of cooling, the energy consumption of all enclosure climate control solutions is constantly reducing with the incorporation of new technologies.

The use of EC motor technology, innovative component design and improved software all serve to increase energy savings, reduce costs, help conserve the environment and increase component service life. Other costs may also be reduced by innovative solutions. The electronic removal of condensate, nano-coating of condenser coils and removal of filters all yield savings in the areas of installation, servicing and maintenance. Elim-ination of the need to install condensate discharge hoses, empty condensate collection bottles, clean condenser coils and wash or change filters provide the ability to employ valuable resources elsewhere.

Rittal offers a host of climate control products that can increase the service life and reliability of electrical components and help to reduce the environmental impact and costs.

The latest addition to the Rittal TopTherm range of fan and filter units is a 230V AC 900m3/h variant. The entire range of fan and filter units utilise a diagonal fan to provide improved performance against increased static pressure difference. In turn, this offers greater energy efficiency and a more constant air throughput, effectively minimising the occurrence of hot spots. The new product is also fitted with an electronically commutated (EC) motor to further reduce power consumption.

Energy efficiency of the TopTherm fan and filter units fitted with single-phase AC motors may be improved in operation by the addition of either a simple thermostat or more sophisticated fan speed control. Rittal's speed controller adjusts the speed of the fan in accordance with the demand for cooling, reducing noise and energy consumption when cooling is not required. It also incorporates a fault alarm activated in the event of the temperature of the air inside the enclosure rising above a predetermined level, an interruption in the supply to the fan, a sensor short-circuit, or a failure in the supply to the controller itself. Not only does this device increase maintenance intervals and reduce energy consumption, it also alerts users to potential problems.

Most of the existing range of TopTherm fan and filter units are available with 24V DC motors, which exhibit a significant reduction in power consumption over the 230V AC and 115V AC motor variants.

For applications where keeping equipment warm and dry is more of an issue, Rittal enclosure heaters provide a high level of energy efficiency due to the incorporation of self-regulating positive temperature coefficient (PTC) technology. Developed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), the heaters provide superior heating performance whilst maintaining the physical dimensions of previous models.

Fitting is by either snap-fastening onto 35mm support rails or direct screw-fixing onto the mounting plate and the quick and easy assembly is completed using clamp-type wiring terminals.

Precise temperature control is achieved simply by including a thermostat in the supply to the heater.  Alternatively, where low air temperatures inside the enclosure are to be avoided to prevent the formation of condensation, control may be effected by connect-ing a hygrostat in the same manner. Both a thermostat and hygrostat can be integrated so that the heater is controlled on both temperature and relative humidity.

The operating temperature range of electrical equip-ment tends to have a lower limit as well as an upper one and therefore providing heating in either indoor or outdoor enclosures may be as crucial as supplying cooling, particularly in changeable climates.

With thermal outputs in the range of 10W to 800W, either a single Rittal enclosure heater, or multiples thereof, can maintain a warm and dry environment for electrical equipment, whatever the size of enclosure.
