Sawmill upgrades with Undrive

Sawmill upgrades with Undrive At one of Finland's leading timber mills in Varkauden Saha, considerable investment has taken place in the latest timber and board handling equipment, all under the control of Unidrive and Unidrive SP drives from Control Techniques. The performance and versatility of the Unidrive SP drives was key to their choice, with most being supplied for Profibus networking, and for positioning applications using SIN/COS multi-turn absolute encoders. The production line at the Varkauden sawmill receives spruce logs (minimum length 2.5m) and takes them through debarking, profile cutting and six-blade sawing to produce a range of sawn timber, mainly for the house building industry. The plant also produces board for the building trade. At each stage of the process - chipping and sawing, sorting, stacking and packaging - the drives are crucial in providing the high accuracy, 0.1mm positioning required for the positioning of the grinding rolls, chippers and saw blade positioning. "We particularly liked the Unidrive SP and Unimotor combination because it is so flexible," says Markku Ahlfors, supervisor, electrical maintenance at the Stora Enso sawmill. "We can get extremely accurate - and fast - positioning. The new drives and motors give a superb response, with positioning being adjusted even during the sawing process."
