Sensing edges ensure safety at Theatre Royal

When the Theatre Royal, Nottingham, commissioned Austin Design and Manufacture to design and install a versatile extension to the theatre’s stage, Tapeswitch was the company it turned to for an effective safety edge system. The new 70m2 stage area is in two sections, each of which can lowered to floor height to be used as a seating area or raised to accommodate larger productions. Even though the movement of the different stage sections is very slow, taking approximately 15 minutes for the full length of travel, this did create several potentially dangerous shearing hazards between the new sections and the existing stage. ADM selected Tapeswitch because of the breadth of its range and the simplicity and durability of the switching principle. Tapeswitch supplied their its sensing edge for the application, provided it in kit form for ease of assembly on site. The potentially dangerous trapping and shearing faces had lengths between 4 metres and 16 metres. Tapeswitch cut the insert switches for the various lengths of sensing edge to the correct sizes, factory-sealed them to IP65 and then supplied them rolled up. The mounting channel and flexible housing were supplied in 4 metre lengths so it was an easy process once on site to mount the channels, then the switches and then the housings. The edges were connected in series to a Tapeswitch PSSU/2 safety control unit to form a category-3 safety system.
