Protective packaging
As a specialist in the design and manufacture of protective packaging solutions, MSA Foams recently completed tool drawer inserts for a major aerospace engineering firm. When the company moved into new, custom built premises its working systems were re-evaluated and re-designed. As a result, all of the departments on the production floor ordered tool cabinets and tools from Nuffield Engineering in Poole. Having previously worked with Nuffield, MSA Foams were their first choice to design and supply foam inserts for the tool drawers.
>Each department had different tooling requirements and therefore it was a totally bespoke project. MSA worked closely with each individual engineer to identify the most commonly accessed tools and how best to group them together in each drawer in each cabinet. The aim was to not only guard against foreign object damage (FOD) but to make the entire department more efficient.
>Designing case inserts that are cut to size for individual collections of tools has been part of the business for over 20 years. In combination with branding services, MSA design tool inserts that organise tools efficiently and ensure missing items are easily identified, eliminating the risk of FOD. Durable custom foam inserts ensure tools are secured in position and fully protected in transit.
>Rather than an engineer who needed a screwdriver, a mallet, two files and a spanner for a specific operation having to open four different drawers, MSA designed a solution where those tools were all present in the same location; everything in its place. MSA incorporated corporate colours by employing blue on yellow foam in the drawer inserts, this would also highlight any missing tools.
>The entire project was managed in stages, working department by department. This enabled MSA to build strong relationships which developed into further projects in the future in different areas of the business and for different applications and solutions.
