Thin-section bearings for space applications

In future, satellites are set to be operated, maintained, repaired or repositioned for longer periods. This also places greater demands on mechanical components. The requirements are low weight, a small installation space, high rigidity and maximum reliability. Rodriguez develops compact precision bearings for demanding space applications, ranging from robotic arms to mobile satellite systems.

Thin-section bearings for space applications

Thin-section bearings play a key role here. Their particularly slim design allows for large diameters with small cross-sections, thereby reducing weight and space requirements - crucial advantages for space applications.

"Even during rocket launch, mechanical components must withstand severe vibrations and high G-forces," explains Ulrich Schroth, Head of the Value Added Products Division at Rodriguez. "Once in orbit, the focus is then on executing movements precisely and reliably over long periods of time."

Typical applications include robotic arms for in-orbit servicing, which can be used to maintain or reposition satellites, as well as movable solar arrays and other positioning systems. Specially adapted bearings from Rodriguez have been in use for years in robotic arms on the exterior of the International Space Station (ISS).

Customised solutions instead of standard bearings

Standard products are often insufficient for space applications. Rodriguez therefore specifically adapts thin-section bearings to the installation space and system requirements. Diameter, width, weight, materials and lubricants can be customised. Vacuum conditions, outgassing, radiation and long operating times must also be taken into account.

Rodriguez develops these bespoke solutions within its Value Added Products (VAP) division, based on its own bearing components. "We come into play where mechanical movement in space needs to be carried out precisely, reliably and within the smallest of spaces," says Schroth, "and thin-section bearings are a key technology for this."

As the number and service life of satellites increase, so too does the importance of high-precision, lightweight and custom-designed bearing solutions.
