No matter what size your production facility is there are some simple stats that every manager needs to know. The first of these is how many you made: counting finished goods is the starting point for productivity calculations. Counting can be automated with an off the shelf sensor and a remote IO device. By using a remote IO device data can be sent directly to an application, such as ERP software and integrated into reporting.
The second is how long your machine ran for: uptime is essential to determining OEE and most machines have someway to indicate their state, such as a tower light system. By using the signals for the tower light, a remote IO device can record when the machine was running and for how long. This can provide vital insight into the efficiency and availability of individual equipment and whole systems.
Finally, you need to know if something has changed: getting alerts when something changes can direct maintenance to where its needed and when its needed. By using remote IO devices alerts can be sent to a smartphone meaning you don’t need to be physically next to each machine.
